Things To Do

Explore the activities the local area provides to our guests.

We are lucky to be in a location that is close to so many attractions and activities. From walking through our beautiful countryside to sampling local wines, the Kaipara area has a lot to offer.

Here are some of our favourite highlights. Feel free to ask us about any specific activities you’re interested in, as there’s too many to list!

Meuseums

Matakohe Kauri Museum
This large museum is dedicated to the history of the Kauri tree in New Zealand. Kauri logging is an important part of New Zealand’s history and this museum, with interesting, interactive displays is a must-see. Located under 30 minutes from Valley Vista.
Mangawhai Museum
This museum displays a lot of the local history from around the Kaipara area. It is a great way to learn more about this area which has a rich history, including historic buildings which have been relocated to the museum site. Located 15 minutes from Valley Vista.

Walks and Hikes

Mangawhai Coast Walkway
This walkway is worthwhile for the views you take in while walking. Situated along the surf beach, you look out to the Pacific Ocean and the islands along the coastline. This is an easy walk, although with some steep climbs. Exploring

Waipu Caves
These are very popular with tourists, and are a great way to learn about some of the caves we have in New Zealand. There is a set walking track to the caves, although the inner caves are only suitable for experienced cavers. More information can be found here: https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/northland/places/waipu-area/things-to-do/waipu-caves-track/ Located just over 30 minutes from Valley Vista.
Piroa Falls
The Piroa Falls are a great place to visit in the summer; you can have a dip in the water under the falls and take a picnic lunch along too. The walk to the falls is very short, although a bit steep and rough in places. More information can be found here: https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/northland/places/waipu-area/things-to-do/piroa-falls-track/ Located under 20 minutes from Valley Vista.

Markets

Mangawhai Village Market
This very popular market has a brilliant range of stalls. From local produce to beautifully hand-crafted goods, there’s something for everyone. It takes place at the Village Hall, every Saturday Morning, from 9:00-1:00. Located 13 minutes from Valley Vista
Paparoa Farmer’s Market
Another great market, this time in Paparoa. There’s always a good selection of produce, food and more. A little further from Valley Vista, but close to the Matakohe Kauri Museum! Takes place from 9:00-12:00 every Saturday in the Village Green. Located 20 Minutes from Valley Vista.

Kaiwaka is easily accessed off SH1, Valley Vista is 2.2 kms from SH1, off Baldrock Road an 1 km from there to our gate.

We are around 20 minutes from Mangawhai and 25 minutes from the Heads. Kaiwaka has great cafes, a vibrant arts scene and great sporting roots. We have bush walks on our property and via a network of paper roads (unformed legal roads), we have access to so much more. Wineries and olive groves are nearby, as are markets and other local attractions. Ask us about marae visits.
